Abstract

Ecotourism has become one of the fastest growing sectors in the tourism industry. Tourism and wetlands have a complex and profound relationship. Wetlands are considered some of the most productive ecosystems in the world because they provide water, food, building materials, transport, coastal protection and also provide important opportunities for tourism and recreation. The objective of the study was to analyze and describe in a general way the RAMSAR sites in Ecuador, through a systematic bibliographic review. Finally, an overview of wetland tourism in Ecuador is presented. The main results indicate that there are 19 RAMSAR sites in Ecuador as of 2020. Wetland tourism is on the rise, and these sites are visited mainly by people interested in enjoying landscapes and observing wildlife species. It is important to implement new policies and regulations to preserve these sites with sustainable measures.
