Conflicts and impacts generated by mining: a threat to the territory of the Cofán de Sinangoe indigenous community, Sucumbíos - Ecuador

Abstract

Obtaining natural resources from mining activities generates social and economic conflicts that result in environmental impacts to the components water, soil, flora, fauna and aesthetics. These activities affect the communities living in the areas of influence. The objective of the study was to evaluate the conflicts and environmental impacts generated by the exploitation of natural resources. The data was obtained from social actors through a field interview with people directly affected, a visual analysis made by experts in the field on the report VISION 360, a program broadcast by a famous television channel in Ecuador. The results indicate that the most affected are the social conflicts that are mostly associated with children's health, as well as the rejection by the Cofán community of Sinangoe of the decisions made by the environmental authority. Water resources, fauna, natural landscape and landscape with the aspects that have suffered the greatest impact.
